Main uses of dimethyl sulfate

The application of dimethyl sulfate in pesticide manufacturing is mainly reflected as an efficient but high-risk methylation reagent, used to introduce methyl (- CH3) into the molecular structure, thereby constructing the core active ingredients of various insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides.

In the field of insecticides, it used to be a key intermediate for the synthesis of organophosphate pesticides such as Methamidophos, Acephate, Fenthion, and Imidacloprid. Among them, Methamidophos was completely banned from production, circulation, and use in China in 2008 due to its extremely high toxicity. In 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced that it would once again be included in the national list of banned pesticides. Although acetamiprid has not been completely banned, its use in crops such as vegetables, fruits, and tea has been restricted since 2019 to reduce food safety risks.

In terms of herbicides, dimethyl sulfate is involved in the synthesis of broad-spectrum herbicides such as glyphosate, paraquat, pyrimethanil, and dicamba. Among them, paraquat has been completely banned in China since 2020 due to its lack of specific detoxifying agents and high mortality rate. The methylation pathway of dimethyl sulfate relied on in its production process has also been forcibly phased out.

In fungicides, the synthesis of fipronil relies on the methylation modification of urea groups by dimethyl sulfate. This process is still limited in some non food crops, but is facing strict environmental and health scrutiny.

It is worth noting that with the implementation of China's "Pesticide Management Regulations" and "Diagnostic Criteria for Occupational Acute Dimethyl Sulfate Poisoning (GBZ 40-2024)", all pesticide production processes involving dimethyl sulfate must undergo full chain electronic traceability and sealing operations, and any unauthorized use constitutes a criminal offense.

At the international level, although the European Union has not directly banned dimethyl sulfate, its downstream products such as fluazinam and thiamethoxam have been moved to Annex V in the 2026 new regulations due to residual risks, with a very low detection limit of 0.01 mg/kg, essentially cutting off the export channel for synthetic pesticides containing this reagent. The US EPA also implements strict risk assessments for pesticide registration, promoting companies to shift towards green alternative paths.

Currently, dimethyl carbonate (DMC) has become the mainstream alternative solution. It is non-toxic, biodegradable, and has high atomic economy. It has successfully replaced dimethyl sulfate in the synthesis of low toxicity herbicides and insecticide intermediates at the laboratory and industrial levels, such as new sulfonylurea and pyridine pesticides. This marks an accelerated transformation of pesticide manufacturing from "high toxicity and high risk" to "green and sustainable".
